โจ๐โจ๐ The Barbie Movie๐ โจ๐โจ
Welcome to another episode of HH Reviews!๐ And a long overdue one, at that. Folks, let me acknowledge right off the top here that the Barbie Movie could not possibly be more in my wheelhouse as a concept, so I definitely went into this movie wanting to like it and having high hopes. Call that bias if you will.๐คทโโ๏ธ
But I can honestly say that it exceeded my expectations, even as high as they were. Even Mr. HH loved it, despite me making him dress up as Ken for the night๐ฑโโ๏ธ
But let me be more specific about why it exceeded my expectations. Because this is really the reason I thought it would be a good movie to do a review for. If you've heard the debates about this movie but not seen it yourself yet, you probably have a sense that its a movie about feminism and man-hating and political messages๐ข. Well, I'm here to bust that myth, because the Barbie Movie is pure and simple FUN, above all else. And I was pleasantly surprised at how non-serious it takes itself๐คก.
The basic idea is that there is "Barbie Land" where Barbie and Ken (and all the other Barbies and Kens - basically every different type of Barbie doll ever made has a corresponding Barbie in Barbie Land - ๐ฉโโ๏ธNurse Barbie and ๐พTennis Barbie and ๐ทโโ๏ธConstruction Barbie and ๐ดPresident Barbie etc etc etc), and then there's the real world. And never the twain shall m eet..... or so we think....๐
Because once ๐ฑโโ๏ธStereotypical Barbie (Margot Robie, the main Barbie - who is actually called Stereotypical Barbie because shes basically just the generic hot blonde barbie we all know and love without any particular job), starts to get unexplained feelings of stress, anxiety and existential dread in the normally utopian Barbie Land one day, the nexus between Barbie Land and the Real World is discovered.
The Real World girls who play with Barbies have an effect on the Barbies in Barbie Land, you see. For the most part, that means the Barbies are all happy in their Dream Houses, frolicking around without a care in the world. But Barbie (Margot Barbie - lets call her MB to cut down on the confusion) starts feeling weird because her Real World owner is starting to really struggle with being a mother and a career woman in the Real World dominated by the Patriarchy.
Lets pause there for a second because I know what you're thinking - ugh, "the Patriarchy" ๐. I know - I agree. I was worried we were headed down a preachy path too. But the movie actually does such a good job of keeping it light and making fun of everyone - boys, girls, Barbies and Kens. Yes, "The Patriarchy" is the bad guy of the film. But its not really portrayed as an "all men = bad" kind of thing. Its basically a corrupting force that is not necessarily good for men or women in general - its just good for whoever's in control. For example, amongst the Kens of Barbie Land, we also have one Allan (Michael Cera) who has just as miserable a time with The Patriarchy as the girls.
And most importantly, the movie really doesnt get too deep with this whole Patriarchy thing. Its presented as a generic goofy bad-guy concept (Ryan Gosling's main Ken (call him RK) constantly gets the Patriarchy confused for something to do with horses, which he thinks are very cool๐). Its basically just an idea that is there in the background that allows the movie to take place, and gives the characters something to struggle against. The physical representation of The Patriarchy in the Real World is the Matel corporation executive suite, led by Will Ferrell. Yes, a bunch of old white dudes are in charge of Barbie. Thats about as political as the movie gets, and again its really just played for laughs - we get to see Will Ferrell freak out about Barbies running amok, and eventually he and his gang of execs has to canoe/bike/fly/rollerblade ๐ข through the complicated portal between Real World and Barbie Land which is an absolute treat.
Anyways, back to the plot. Real World-Barbie Land nexus is freaking out. MB is having a bad time and worried she's gonna get cellulite. She and Ken mosey on over to the Real World to find her owner and see what the heck is going on. At first she thinks the owner is this edgy girl who absolutely hates her and everything she stands for (very woke tee nager who thinks Barbie is bad for women๐ซ), but eventually realizes that her owner is actually the girl's mom (America Ferrera), who is having the aforementioned crisis while trying to deal with her annoying daughter, difficult work environment and the general anxieties of trying to stay afloat in the modern world.
While Barbie is realizing how much more complicated and difficult life is in the Real World, Ken is just amazed by how freaking awesome it seems to be a dude in this world. Again, the movie isnt just dunking on men here and saying they are terrible - for example, Ken "applies for jobs" with his credentials of simply being a man, and gets turned down (but with a wink towards the fact that maybe back in the 60s, things would have been different!). But overall, Ken is infatuated with this world where he clearly has much greater status than in Barbie Land, where the women come first and Kens are just set dressing. So, he wants to bring The Patriarchy back to Barbie Land - and thats what he does. He sneaks back through the crazy rollerblading/spaceship flying portal while MB is still sorting things out with her new Real World Friends, and starts making some changes๐จ.
We come to find out that Ken is really just insecure about his place in Barbie World. He loves Barbie and needs her attention, but she doesnt really see him as anything more than her friend Ken who hangs out at the beach (Ken LOVES beach.๐โโ๏ธ๐ ๐Big beach guy). So he lashes out by implementing Patriarchy while MB is away. The boys take over Barbie Land congress and plan to change the constitution. They change the Dream Houses into Mojo-Dojo Casa Houses (seriously, this is what he calls his man cave and its one of the best bits in the movie. Lots of memes about it online now). And they have all the Barbies running around serving them drinks and massaging their shoulders and generally being submissive. Its a man's world now, when Barbie and mom+daughter show up, with Will Ferrel and co in hot pursuit (Ferrell is trying to get Barbie back in The Box ๐ฆ- aka the box she came in originally - so she will stop making trouble in the Real World and hurting their sales numbers๐).
MB has to slowly "deprogram" the Barbies one by one, helping them remember what it was like when they were in charge of Barbie Land. Eventually they all make a plan to pit the Kens against each other which leads to one of the best scenes of the movie - a giant war/musical number/dance off between the two main Kens and their followers. In all the confusion, the Kens forget that they were supposed to vote to change the constitution today to officially take power. Instead, the Barbies manage to grab it back and restore order to Barbie Land.
The Barbies do have some reflection on their past treatment of the Kens, and the movie basically gives a little wink to the fact that the Barbies in Barbie Land have some of the same flaws as The Patriarchy has in the Real World. MB tells RK that "maybe every night doesnt have to be girls night" after all. Thats really about as deep as the whole gender wars stuff goes in this movie, despite what youve read online. For the most part, its no more political than any "boys vs girls" games you played during recess in kindergarten. Its just fun and silliness๐.
MB eventually encounters the original creator of Barbie during all the chaos of being chased by Will Ferrell, and has a deep chat with her about what its like to be a real woman. Long story short, MB decides that she doesnt want to be a perfect Barbie living in Barbie Land anymore. She wants all the complications and highs and lows and messiness of a real life in the real world, and so she takes the leap. The movie ends with MB in the real world, going to her first ever gynecologist appointment (๐ฑ) which is a funny callback to some references throughout the movie to the fact that Barbies and Kens have no genitals๐.
Some other highlights from the movie:
๐ฆKate McKinnon slays it as "Weird Barbie" - the result of some real world girl "playing too hard" with her Barbie.
๐ฆI already mentioned Cera's Allan - the male counterweight to the Kens, who is pretty much exactly what you'd expect Michal Cera to be in this context.
๐ฆthe early scenes of Ken and Barbie in the Real World are awesome. Seeing Ken fall in love with horse imagery, and watching the two get arrested constantly because they dont know how anything works, is a lot of fun.
๐ฆand most of all, RYAN GOSLING AS KEN ABSOLUTELY STEALS THIS MOVIE. Yes, Margot Robie is a perfect Barbie, but OMG Ken is hilarious in this. From trying to describe his job in Barbie Land ("Its just 'beach'" ๐คฃ) to the Mojo-Dojo Casa House, to the big song/war scene, and perhaps best of all, an UNBELIEVABLE rendition of Matchbox 20's "Push" with his guitar on the beach - Gosling is worth the price of admission alone. Pure entertainment.
Overall, I give the Barbie movie Four Boobs out of Five ๐๐๐๐. Its not going to change the way you see the world, but its also really not trying to, despite all the fuss online. Its making fun of those weighty concepts like feminism and patriarchy just as much as it is exploring and commenting on them. If you go into the movie looking for fun instead of something to complain about, you will absolutely find it.
