What I've learned about grief....

I lost my dad to Covid 2 years ago.

The 2 weeks leading up to his death were horrific, fast, and gut wrenching. I knew it was coming, and it was too fast. There wasn't enough time.

The day he passed I was so angry and heart broken. I didnt get to say a traditional goodbye, holding his hand in his old age, as i expected to. He died alone. I was so pissed. All I could do was cry and paint, until nothing was left ... I was numb.

I can't even remember the first 6 months afterward. I know I went to work. I know I ate and slept, somehow. With the help of friends and family, I parented, I think. I paid bills and bought groceries. I cuddled and cried a lot. My Sir can surely attest to how many days and nights he's held me the tightest. I know grief is a personal process. It's different for each of us, but what I've taken from these last 18 month has been to examine how I define different parts of my life.

Grief has been this unfolding of what were once perceived truths. I had to face that these cannot be truths any longer.

My rock solid "always there for me" daddy, couldn't be there anymore.

I didn't think I'd survive his loss, but I did. I have. I'd even say that I'm thriving in some ways, struggling in others, but surviving nonetheless.

I know I can do difficult things.

I know I can face challenges.

I know life can be both wonderful and horrid at the same time.

I know I can be kind and gentle with myself.

I know I am a compassionate loving person.

I know we don't have forever with all of our loved ones, as much as we want it.

I know I am courageously moving forward through life, afraid or not.
