Very sorry for the -$60/yr paywall but without something in place the "haters" of proper 19th century straight razor honing will become a problem again, I think $1/mo. would keep them at bay but $4.99/mo. is the minimum and I've not even a clue how much of that trickles down to the creator...OnlyFans didn't make this site from the goodness of their own heart, after all

happy shaving to you from NE FL

the process of using a shaped reference tool to reshape your razor's cutting edge

thesuperiorshave.com/product/tss-balsa-wood-convex-doublesided/

this is a block of bass wood I've spent ~45mins/ea. forming into a 2-sided convex shaping mechanism for your straight razor edges

you use the more heavily curved side to hold something coarse, like Dovo green grinding paste, and that surface is what you strop your razor upon to cut in a new edge that will be very likely to be *thinner* than what you had upon there

you use the second side with a finer paste to finish the cutting edge to be comfortable and durable enough for shaving

you can also use a block of wood like this to place behind your hanging strop so as to present a curved reference to your razor where your razor's on the OUTSIDE of the curve, not on the INSIDE of it (like with most hanging strops scenarios), or to wrap some lapping film around this block

three parts today, overhauling an old razor to become a bevel set primarily with a 6.5' diameter and then refined with a larger 25' diameter wheel toward its apex, and then shaving with it...so fun, this part of the job (minus editing) will never get old!

shaping your tools is the first and most difficult step of proper straight razor honing

Here in 1934, Norton-Pike (experts of abrasives/sharpening from Troy, NY) speak at length about a "proper" straight razor's edge being concaved, and even offered - by request only, price unknown - a grinding wheel of 2" thickness made in Arkansas stones...we should be so lucky today, I'd kill for such a tool!

America's shaving forum know-it-alls are just going to have to accept one day that the best way to hone a straight razor was unknown to them for many years, but it was never unknown to the producers.

hello fans, here we shape a piece of balsa to back stropping of the razor, and then shave off of a razor stropped from that shaping mechanism

here's a c. 1905 ancestor of the Connerty Honing Method with a Convex Hone

I doubt any of us alive have shaved off of a straight razor edge of just 10° inclusive angle, I have had an old extra hollow Swedish between-the-wars frameback at about 12° but (as with most of them) I didn't get it with its majority of meat left on the bone.

Wish I was alive to buy that tool new and to use it on the proclaimed 'double hollow' razor from Swedish steel that they tout as best for it! Must've been one hell of a ride.

A fellow in Israel, with whom I shared the knowledge of how to concave his razor's bevel as with the Connerty Honing Method for free (I was successfully able to plant the appearance of an old textbook into Germany's Deutsches Museum while trying to profit from this mularkey) seems pretty happy!

the no-commercials-ever version 4 da peeps!

Gonna see if the distinguished gentleman responsible for Herold strops (of SOLINGEN fame) will make us a version of this very old model of paddle strop, but with the two slabs of wood made intentionally convex [I'll have to mail him the part unless he can CNC such from my .STEP files].

Get a load of the perpetually threatened geniuses of Badger&Blade, today's candidate "H Brad Boonshaft' in the "CONVEX STROP" thread;

badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/convex-strop.611521/#post-11452952

Now, does he really think it is true that ANY convex strop, of ANY diameter, will have NO chance to change the nature of its cutting edge interaction??? So if my diameter's a can of condensed soup (and the strop's not even close to hitting any of the bevel because it bonks in to the hollow grind), still the same thing as a hanging strop slightly deflected by your hand pressure of spine and edge upon the leather? It is simply a fact of physics that at some particular diameter, a strop's leather together with your pressure would touch the cutting edge (= bevel as a whole) and interact upon it WITHOUT deflecting the cutting edge 'up' (away from the base of the leather). But all we need is for its shape to ensure the thin metal 'fin' is never being pushed up and away from the leather, and we'll have a better shave...just try it for yourself and see!
