Licking the big hard wet conk for science! This is the Red Belted Conk (Fomitopsis pinicola species complex), it is a brown rot polypore mushroom that is a common decomposer found on conifer trees. The droplets or moisture on this mushroom are known as guttation, which is essentially mushroom sweat, generated by the fast growing fruiting body. It is not clear if guttation serves a purpose, but it may help deter bugs and slugs from snacking on the tender growing edges of this mushroom. The piney bitter flavor is likely due to polyphenols in the droplets.

Do you like to mush around with fungis? Here’s a quick guide on how to pick your mushroom. As with many of my videos, I fully understand how people tend to anthropromorphize mushrooms. My goal is to promote positivity and facilitate a conversation around handling our own “fruiting bodies”. This video is very much intended as educational (but also humorous) and I hope it spurs some spirited discussion!

Jelly Fungi are evolutionarily ancient mushrooms that are well adapted to drying out and rehydrating with rain. They are characterized by their gelatinous lobed, leafy, and brain like fruiting bodies that produce white spores. Jelly fungi can be saprotrophic (growing on dead wood), but some species are also parasific, feasting on the mycelium of other species in the wood. All jelly fungi are edible, but lack any real flavor. They do however have an interesting gelatinous texture.

Jelly fungi are very popular with certain demographics. I’ve seen that these videos allow people to anthropromorphize the mushroom and have a discussion about our own bodies. Regardless of language, people around the world relate to and engage with this type of content. In societies where conversations around pleasure agree not allowed, I see my content serving as a proxy for the kind of communication people should be having about their own enjoyment. This is just much intended as educational and I hope it facilitates virgous discussion. Cheers!

I’ve been thinking about using mushrooms as a vehicle for Sex ED for awhile, but this particular Amanita really caught my eye for its similarity to a frenulum. I think it’s fascinating how we as humans can anthropromorphize the reproductive organs of mycelium (mushrooms) as our own reproductive organs (human genitals). Given the similarities between fungi and animals it should come as no surprise, plus people have been making mushroom penis jokes for literally thousands of years (Greeks and Romans were very dirty minded). I’ve got plenty more to say on the subject, but for now I hope you enjoy the way I handled these impressive members. Amanita velosa is also absolutely delicious when cooked up in a little bit of butter and salt, one of my favorites.

Fund more grants for Arts & Science, and for fucks sake let’s get that 15$ minimum wage passed already.

This is a PSA for the fellas out there.

Mushrooms are great and I totally understand that sometimes you want to show off your impressive fruiting body. However, before sharing your girthy growths, be sure to obtain enthusiastic consent from the person you are sharing it with.
Having been the recipient of many an unsolicited mushroom picture, I can tell you how jarring it can be to have an inbox filled with poorly lit non consensual mushroom photos. Take a moment to empathize and put yourself in their position. Reciprocal consent and enthusiasm are key to sharing your fungal finds.

Another important note on sending mushroom pictures is to include some context. A mushroom alone isn’t always that interesting, be sure to include some of its surroundings to make for a more pleasurable viewing experience. Proper lighting helps make the mushroom shine, as does showing multiple angles. Remember to have fun with your photos, they don’t have to be that serious, it’s ok to be goofy.
